Plex not considers episodes running

I am trying dispatch since yesterday and found an annoying bug. If the application Plex is not already running, launching an episode from the "Watch next" category on the home screen will not notify Plex that the episode is being watched. The episode plays just fin but on the Plex side the run is not reported. It's likely Plex media server doesn't even know that I am viewing this episode.

I am using Dispatch version 1.0.05 build 93on Shield TV Pro 2019 version 9.1.1.

This is an unfortunate bug on Plex's side. It's actually existed for many years, and I'd reported it back then, though obviously it's never been fixed.

When Dispatch sends the command to Plex to play an item, it's actually a very simple command made through android's Intent system. When an app receives an intent, it's up to that app to handle it correctly.

Unfortunately, the bug is that when the Plex app receives this intent, occasionally it fails to start sending playback progress to the Plex server. There isn't anything I can do about it, since all Dispatch sends to Plex is the "play" command and the unique ID of the item that's meant to be played.

This actually happens with the default launcher on the nvidia shield, too. Like I said, the problem has been around for a few years.

I had been exploring an alternate solution. However, while it was promising at first, after a couple of weeks of working on it, I discovered that it triggered its own set of bugs within the Plex app, and was in the end less reliable than how things are working now.

The only solution would be for Dispatch to have its own video player so that it can play items and report playback progress to the plex server directly, similar to how infuse or kodi likely do it. It's something that's being heavily considered, though it would be a large undertaking on my part. In fact, it's more a question of when, not if, at this point.

I have seen this happen too. When playing immediately from the launcher, Plex has no idea that the stream started and after exactly 15 minutes it times out and reloads the content in poor quality.

The 15 minutes timer could be my inactivity setting in Plex kicking in.

Mike Robben I replied to the original post with an explanation of the issue. Unfortunately there's no solution at this time.

I have also experienced this issue as Bon described.

I tried doing a bit of investigating with Windows Process Explorer but I couldn't turn up much. When streaming normally the file is appeared to be opened by the Plex Transcoder.exe process. When I replicated the issue it is associated with the Plex Media Server.exe process.

Software is up to date as of this post.

    Dispatch: V1.0.052

    Shield TV Pro: 9.1.1

    Plex Media Server: 1.41.2.9200

    Windows 10: 22H2
